Opening Night & Lagniappe

Visitors planning to experience opening night can enjoy two Rochester holiday traditions at once.

The 2026 Big Bright Light Show begins on November 23 alongside Downtown Rochester's annual Lagniappe celebration, taking place from 6–9 p.m.

Lagniappe — a word meaning "a little something extra" — is Downtown Rochester's traditional start to the holiday season. Local merchants celebrate the community while downtown comes alive for the first night of the Big Bright Light Show.

For guests who want to experience Rochester at peak holiday energy, November 23 is a particularly memorable night to plan a stay.

Turn the Lights Into a Holiday Getaway

The Big Bright Light Show can be the centerpiece of a larger holiday trip.

During the season, Rochester and the surrounding area offer holiday performances, historic homes decorated for Christmas, seasonal shopping and other annual traditions.

Consider pairing your visit with holiday experiences such as Holidays at Meadow Brook Hall, a performance at Meadow Brook Theatre, or seasonal events throughout Downtown Rochester.

Rather than choosing just one, stay for the weekend and experience a different side of the holidays each day.
